If you ask any pet owner who their very best friend is, most times they will give you their pet’s name. Our four legged faithful companions provide us with unconditional love and devotion that brings happiness into our lives.  Their loyalty and constant companionship comes from their natural instinct to bond, as per Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer. “Dogs are naturally affectionate.  They want to love and be loved.”

Recently there have been studies done to prove that there are both physical and emotional benefits to owning a pet. Therapy Dogs are one example - trained animals that provide physical, social, cognitive and emotional help to patients with a variety of ailments.
Therapy dogs visit the elderly in nursing homes.  They visit patients confined to the hospital for extended periods of time. The R.E.A.D. literacy program in some of NYC public libraries and public schools helps kids learn how to read. Reading to dogs calms young children and relieves the pressure of embarrassment when they make reading mistakes.

The National Institute for Diabetic Alert Dogs Inc. is another organization doing great work for patients as young as 5 years old who have diabetes.  The trained dog helps the patient and the family better manage the lows and highs of their blood sugar ensuring success in the management of their diabetes.

Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) is a non-profit organization that works with therapy dogs to enhance the lives of people with disabilities with the goal being increased independence and loving companionship. In addition, this organization also helps our wounded veterans put their lives back together at home by providing them with an assistance dog who can help them regain their independence.
